Ramp Handrails and Kerb Rails
On a ramp, handrails serve the same purpose as on stairs, steadiness and guidance for people who are blind, vision impaired, or have a mobility or intellectual disability, while a kerb rail stops a wheelchair running off the open edge.
AS 1428.1 sets a minimum 1m clearance between opposing rails, the same 270° top arc clearance and 30–50mm diameter as stair handrails, with ends extending 300mm horizontally past the transition. A kerb rail needs to sit parallel with, or no more than 100mm back from, the inside edge of the handrail.
Getting it right
The failures we see most are handrail terminations that don't extend correctly, tight clearances between opposing rails, and kerb rails positioned too far from the handrail line to actually stop a caster wheel.
